Last night, several years after the launch of Grand Theft Auto 5’s enhanced edition on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S, the game’s next-gen features finally arrived on PC as part of a free update for all existing users.

Since Grand Theft Auto 5 Enhanced went live on Steam, the game has welcomed a healthy number of players, with 94,875 players online at the time of writing – enough to make the platform’s top 10 games right now by current players – and a 24-hour peak just over 187,000.

Despite this, GTA5 Enhanced user reviews are currently sitting with a “mixed” average on Steam, with some of the negative reviews saying they have had issues transferring existing accounts.

“My character created back in 2016 can not be transferred to a new version of the same game, where there is basically nothing new worth the 90GB update,” reads one review. In a post on Rockstar support titled Migrating your Online Profile from GTAV Legacy to GTAV Enhanced on PC, the developer stated “migrations may take time to complete”, but the issue has still caused a bit of upset among the community.

Other complaints on Steam include chatter about the game’s overall performance, and disappointment about the extent of the promised enhancements.

“Runs great as long as you are not loading or trying to load online content with friends,” reads one Grand Theft Auto V Enhanced review. Another questioned “why even bother with this release?”, claiming that the game looks the same – for them – as it did before.

Elsewhere, Rockstar is gearing up for the release of the next entry in its GTA series. GTA 6 is currently slated for this autumn across Xbox and PlayStation. While the team hasn’t said anything especially concrete about a PC version other than a little hint in passing, recent claims by accessories company Corsair Gaming suggested the PC release isn’t due until “early 2026”.
