Xbox’s Forza Horizon 5 is the top selling new PS5 game of 2025

Forza Horizon 5’s PS5 port has surpassed three million copies sold, making Microsoft’s racing game the top new PS5 game of 2025.

Nearly four years after its original 2021 release on Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and PC, Forza Horizon 5 was ported to PS5 on April 29, 2025.

This port marked the first time a mainline game in the Forza series had been released on a PlayStation console in its 20-year history.

According to a report by The Alinea Insight newsletter, which has tracked sales between January 1, 2025, and July 21, 2025, Forza Horizon 5 has now surpassed three million copies sold on PS5, just under three months after its release on the platform.

Just 25 days after its PS5 release, Forza Horizon 5 sold a mammoth two million copies, a feat that took PlayStation’s 2024 platforming hit Astro Bot roughly three months, while Kojima Productions’ long-awaited sequel, Death Stranding 2, sold one million copies 25 days after its release in June.

A recent 25% discount helped push Forza Horizon 5 past the three million mark and overtake Monster Hunter Wilds (which has sold 2.9 million copies on PS5 during this period) as the top-selling game of 2025 on PS5, in terms of copies sold so far.

Forza Horizon 5’s port to PS5 is part of Xbox’s changing, and more lenient, approach to multiplatform releases. Back in January, Microsoft’s boss, Phil Spencer, said, “There’s no reason to put a ring fence around any game,” when discussing Xbox first-party releases for platforms like Switch and PlayStation.

While this has been a somewhat controversial change of strategy for Microsoft and Xbox, it has now allowed a first-party Xbox release to snag the top spot as the best-selling PS5 game of the year.
