Former Xbox console exclusive Forza Horizon 5 is PS5’s highest-selling game of the year so far, says analyst

Forza Horizon 5 is the highest-selling game on PS5 this year so far, surpassing 3m copies sold.

That’s according to analyst firm Alinea Analytics, which has estimates on the top selling games of the year. Forza Horizon 5 was previously an Xbox-exclusive, but released on Sony’s rival platform at the end of April.

By comparison, Forza Horizon 5 has been played by more than 45.5 million players across Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S, though predominantly via the Game Pass subscription, since its release in 2021. On Steam, it’s sold a further 6.5m copies (also since 2021).

Compared with Astro Bot, Forza Horizon 5 has already surpassed 3m copies sold, while the Sony platformer will soon reach this number almost a year after its release.

In short, Microsoft’s decision to sell its games on PlayStation is doing very well indeed. As we reported back in May, Microsoft dominated the best-selling PS5 games charts the month prior. As the marketing slogan goes, everything is an Xbox nowadays.

Alinea’s estimates on the remainder of the top PS5 games brings in further intriguing statistics away from Xbox, too.

The second highest-selling PS5 game so far is Monster Hunter Wilds, with 2.9m copies sold. However, due to the higher price tag, it’s actually generated more revenue than Forza. Capcom’s latest has also sold 6.2m on Steam, with the PC version outselling consoles almost 2:1.

Overall, RPGs dominate the top five. In third place is Assassin’s Creed Shadows, with around 2m copies on PS5 (compared with 1.1 million players on Xbox, thanks to Ubisoft+). Then there’s Elden Ring spin-off Nightreign, which has sold 1.4m copies on PlayStation consoles, compared with 2.7m on Steam and 750K on Xbox – and therefore totalling almost 5m copies. On PlayStation, 84 percent of Nightreign players have also played the original Elden Ring.

Rounding out the top five is Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, with 1.4m copies on PS5 so far this year. Alinea noted this is almost as many copies as last year’s Metaphor: ReFantazio and Like a Dragon Infinite Wealth combined, proving the outstanding success of the game for a new IP.

Another comparison is with Kojima Productions’ PS5 exclusive Death Stranding 2, which Alinea estimates has sold 1m copies after 25 days on sale.

Forza Horizon 5 received positive praise when it was released on Xbox Series X/S back in 2021. Now, Forza Horizon 5 on PS5 Pro delivers the best console experience.
