Beat Saber is ending support for PS4 and PS5, highlighting how little Sony’s VR efforts have been supported.
Beginning this month, updates will no longer be released, including new songs or music packs. The game will still be available to download and play, while any extra content released prior to 18th June will remain purchasable and playable. Cross-buy between PS4 and PS5 will also remain active.
In addition, multiplayer will no longer be available on either PlayStation console from 21st January 2026.
The VR rhythm game will still be available on other platforms, including Steam and Meta Quest.
Previously, in November 2024, Beat Games ended support for Meta Quest 1 devices as they became obsolete.
Essentially, it seems the studio views the PlayStation VR devices in the same light.
Reads a note on the Beat Saber FAQ: “As we look to the future and plan the next big leap for Beat Saber, we have made the decision to no longer release updates for PS4 and PS5 starting in June 2025. Our passion for VR remains unwavering. We are excited about the possibilities that lie ahead and what we can bring to Beat Saber fans who have been on this journey with us over the past seven years.”
The final song added to Beat Saber on PlayStation will therefore be Lady Gaga’s Abracadabra. Death or love tonight? It’s seemingly the former.
While Sony’s PSVR2 was praised as a piece of hardware on its release in 2023, the company has been widely criticised for failing to support the platform.
Wrote Eurogamer’s VR expert Ian Higton last year: “It’s hard to stay excited about the PlayStation VR2 if even Astro Bot won’t wear one.” Synapse was perhaps the last decent PSVR2 exclusive, developed and published by nDreams and starring David Hayter and Jennifer Hale.
PSVR2 received a price cut in February this year, dropping from £530 to £400.
Still, it’s hard to justify that price when so few games are available. At its latest State of Play, Sony revealed just one PSVR2 game: Thief VR: Legacy of Shadow. And even that is coming out across multiple other platforms.
Beat Saber is probably the killer app of VR, a brilliant rhythm game where players are tasked with slicing coloured boxes in time to songs. It’s been expanded hugely since released to include music packs from multiple pop artists including Daft Punk, The Weeknd, Ariana Grande, and more.
