Will The Witcher 3 get a Switch 2 upgrade? CD Projekt skirts issue for now, as it’s “all in” on Cyberpunk 2077

During Nintendo’s dedicated Switch 2 Direct earlier this month, developer CD Projekt Red announced Cyberpunk 2077 would be a console launch title. So, does this mean that Witcher 3 will also be getting a Switch 2 upgrade? Well, CD Projekt is keeping that under wraps for now, as it’s “all in on Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition” on Switch 2.

“Our relationship with Nintendo goes back to the original Nintendo Switch, where we released The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. We were happy with how that game was received by players so, when we heard about the more powerful Nintendo Switch 2, we immediately thought it would be the perfect platform for Cyberpunk 2077,” CD Projekt’s gameplay technical design expert Filip Downar told Eurogamer, adding that the studio was “thrilled” to be working with Nintendo again.

“It’s incredibly exciting to be a launch title for this new hardware. Alongside all the Nintendo Switch 2 exclusive features – like motion controls, gyroscope implementation, the mouse sensor, and more – we can’t wait to see how the community explores the game in new ways,” Downar continued.

“Our team has been working passionately to make all this happen, and for more than seven weeks, to be clear! This misunderstanding arose because the build we showcased was finalised seven weeks before we showcased it at Nintendo. Development has been ongoing for much longer as we’re working to bring Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition to Nintendo Switch 2.”

As for how the team at CD Projekt feels seeing such an incredible turnaround in opinion following the game’s initial release in 2020, which was marred with glitches and bugs so extreme Sony even went so far as to delist Cyberpunk 2077 from the PlayStation Store, Downar said everyone was “incredibly proud and happy” to see so many players enjoying the game.

“The team has done a great job in order to release each and every update, and now we’re looking forward to seeing an entirely new audience as well as members of our community explore Night City with the Nintendo Switch 2 version,” Downar concluded.

In October 2023, CDPR announced it had shifted 25m copies of Cyberpunk 2077, while Phantom Liberty sold 3m copies in its first week of launch. A sequel is now in development.

As for Nintendo’s next console, the Switch 2 is scheduled for release on 5th June. A number of original Switch games such as Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom will have paid upgrades for Switch 2, bringing enhanced frame rates and more. Alongside these paid upgrades, Nintendo is also preparing free updates for a number of original Switch titles, such as Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury and Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker.
